Position light shunting signal E961 at Southampton Maritime Freightliner Terminal was a multi-SPAD signal. To assist drivers in locating the signal, double-sided signs reading "Beware E961" were positioned adjacent to it, on both sides of the line [8.56].

Signal W187 on the Down Slow line at Wimbledon is the first signal beyond the flyover that carries the Up Slow line over the Fast lines. Approaching from the north, the Down lines are separated by the Up Slow, but beyond the flyover they run adjacent to each other. On occasions, drivers running on the Down Slow had been misled into reading the Down Fast signal adjacent to W187. In May 2001, as a short term remedy, line reminder signs with a letter "S" [8.57] were erected on the approach to signal W187 and adjacent to the signal itself.

In 2002, a series of six countdown markers were provided on the approach to signal S49 at Dore. Some of the markers are located inside Bradway Tunnel.

Late in 2002, the Scotland Zone reversed its decision of three years earlier, and changed most of its signal reminder boards so that they no longer had a yellow background (see [8.40 & 8.41]), reverting instead to the original colours [8.61 & 8.62].

Following the opening of the new Edinburgh Park station, temporary "Station Ahead" signs [8.67] were installed on each rail approach in 2004. Also in 2004, a temporary signal reminder board [8.68] was installed on the approach to a new signal (number SJ40) at Stanley Junction (Scotland Region).

Drivers run an increased risk of forgetting to stop at a particular station if not every service is booked to call there. Two stations where this applies are Treforest Estate and Romford (Main line platforms only). To prompt drivers to think about whether or not their train is booked to call these stations, reminder signs have been provided at the preceding stations in each direction of travel. Signs bearing the name "Treforest Estate" [8.71] are installed at Treforest in the Down direction and at Taffs Well in the Up direction. In addition to the "Station Ahead" boards that had previously been installed on each Main line approach to Romford, reminder signs have been provided on some of the platforms at Stratford in the Down direction and at Shenfield in the Up direction. These signs bear the name "Romford" underneath a question mark [8.72].
